Port Washington's Founding
French explorers first encountered a Native American village at the mouth of Sauk Creek, the site of modern-day downtown Port Washington.
Following the forced removal of the indigenous people by the U.S. government in the 1830s, the first settlers arrived in 1835. They initially named their settlement "Wisconsin City" before renaming it in honor of President George Washington.
In the mid-19th century, Port Washington vied to become the Washington County seat. However, disputes and allegations of election fraud stalled the process.
To resolve the conflict, the Wisconsin State Legislature created Ozaukee County from the eastern part of Washington County, establishing Port Washington as its county seat.
