Worth the Drive

Today on "Worth the Drive" we are taking a look at the 1860 Light Station Museum- Port Washington, WI

With Fall finally here a lot of us are taking some time to drive around and enjoy the beautiful colors. The next time you go on a drive head towards Port Washington, enjoy the beauty of nature on the drive and then stop by this hidden gem for some history and a beautiful view! This light station is located on the bluff in Port Washington (Johnson St) and offers a unique experience for all!

This Light Station was obtained by Port Washington in the 1990's and the Historical Society met the challenge of restoring it to its original design. Port Washingtons first coastal lighthouse was constructed on the present site in 1849 but was demolished and rebuilt in 1860. The restoration brought the light station back to its 1860 design that had a dual purpose, a house for the Lightkeeper and a navigational aid. The location, high on the bluff, maximized visibility for those on Lake Michigan.

When you enter the light station/museum you see the light keeper's living quarters. This includes his room, the formal parlor, the dining room, and the kitchen. As you head to the second floor you are able to admire photos and articles related to Port Washington's harbor. From there, you head up to the tower where you will see the Fresnel lens and one of the best views in town! The 1860 Light Station is filled with history and will leave you with unforgettable memories.

In addition to the light station, there is a generator building (located near the rear of the light station) and a replica oil house. Marine artifacts were added to the yard such as a boat and anchors. The generator building is a must-see, it houses a small maritime museum. They did a great job putting this small maritime museum together!

So no matter if you live in Port Washington or hours away take some time this weekend to enjoy this local gem, the history it holds, and the beautiful views it offers! They will be open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm but they are only open till mid-October so don't miss out! So enjoy a beautiful Fall drive this weekend that brings you to the 1860 Light Station here in Port Washington, it will definitely be worth the drive!
