Boats of all shapes and sizes will fill Port Washington’s harbor Saturday, August 20, as Port Washington Maritime Heritage Festival hosts a cardboard boat regatta. Businesses and individuals are invited to build their own cardboard vessels to compete in the regatta.
Awards in four categories—single and team entries in youth and adult divisions—will be given for the fastest time, but other awards will be given for best construction, best theme and costumes, the team that has the most fun and even one for the most spectacular sinking.
“The boats can be elaborate or simple,” said festival organizer Bob Mittnacht. “We’re looking for people to be creative. Even if you sink, if you have a great theme or great spirit, you can win a prize.”
The cardboard boat regatta is a new event at the annual Maritime Heritage Festival, which is held in charming downtown Port Washington August 19-21. The family-friendly festival features tall ships that can be sailed on or toured, harbor cruises, an artisan market, and entertainment on two stages throughout the three-day event.
Entries for the cardboard boat regatta must be received by July 22. The entry fee is $15 for singe-person vessels and $30 for teams. There are several rules regarding the construction of the vessels, which must be made from non-waxed corrugated cardboard. Complete rules and the entry form can be found at www.portmaritimefestival.com/regatta.html.
