The organizers of the Port Washington Maritime Heritage Festival are bringing back the Cardboard Boat Regatta for a second year, and this time with an extra twist.

With a successful first run of the Cardboard Boat Regatta as part of Port Washington Maritime Heritage Festival last year, organizers are preparing to bring the event back — but this year's festival will be more than just a repeat.

While the weekend-long festival will involve a race of cardboard boaters who built their vessels ahead of time on August 18, the next day there "will be an event like nothing before in Port Washington," according to a press release from organizers.

On August 19, teams will assemble in Port with two hours to build a race using supplies provided by the festival and with the intent of successfully floating two participants for a 175-yard course.

For details about both races, see the Port Washington Maritime Heritage Festival website, www.portmaritimefestival.com or call the Port Main Street Offices at (262)268-1132
KAPCO Kids 2 Kids Toy Drive

Businesses Demonstrate the Giving Spirit through the KAPCO Toy Drive

Port Washington Main Street is proud to announce that our local downtown businesses will again be sponsoring toy drop-off bins for the KAPCO "Kids to Kids" Toy Drive this holiday season. All Port Washington businesses are encouraged to participate in this heartwarming program by requesting a toy drop-off bin for their store, restaurant or office. New this year, we are asking local families to “sponsor” a drop-off bin of their choice that they can help fill through the generosity of their family, friends, neighbors, school, clubs…etc. What a perfect way for parents to teach their children about the spirit of giving to others who are less fortunate this Christmas.

Toys will be collected November 21st through December 15th and will be given to families in need throughout Ozaukee County. Please help put a smile on a deserving child’s face this Christmas by requesting a drop-off bin for your business or by sponsoring a bin as a family. All requests can be made to the Port Washington Main Street office at (262) 268-1132.
Thrills and Chills - The Port Washington Ghost Walk

Like Brigadoon, it appears out of the mists of Lake Michigan. Unassuming and utterly charming, Port Washington resembles a quaint New England fishing village. Beyond that veneer of gentility, there is a dark side – a haunted history. Yes, Port Washington has its fair share of ghosts.

In 2010, the town is opened its doors and exposed the skeletons in their closets with the Port Washington Ghost Walk. It was such a success that they’re doing it again. One night only – Saturday, October 29, celebrate Halloween weekend with fellow paranormal enthusiasts.

Teaming up with downtown businesses and the visitor’s bureau, Caper Company Tours has crafted a full night of ghost hunting. Port Washington is also known at the Little City of Seven Hills, so the walks are not for the faint of heart in either stamina or excitability. The downtown walk culminates with a candlelit exploration of a spooky Port Washington cemetery.

This cemetery was a surprise for Caper Company researchers. During explorations of the area, they captured of possible evidence of paranormal activity. Mysterious audio recordings sound as though someone or something in the cemetery is attempting to communicate.

According to Susan Fry, owner of Caper Company Tours, “I was home from a research trip to Port Washington and was listening to the recordings from the cemetery. We’d spent a long day talking with locals about their ghostly encounters but hadn’t heard any real stories about the cemetery. I was so shocked to hear whispery voices coming out of the speaker that I sat up, rubbed the goosebumps on my arms, and took notice.”

The kind of haunting evidence that Ms. Fry captured is called an electronic voice phenomena or EVP. It’s a noise or sound that cannot be heard with the human ear, but might be captured on a digital audio recorder. Professional ghost hunters will frequently conduct EVP sessions when investigating.

Interested in experiencing all the spooky details for yourself? Five tours are offered the night of October 29, starting at 7:00 pm and stepping off every 30 minutes. The last tour departs at 9:00 pm and they will take about 2 hours to complete. Space is limited, so reserve or purchase tickets at www.CaperCompany.com or, for more details, contact Susan Fry at susanscotfry@capercompany.com or 262-498-5777.

Happy Halloween.
