"... a breath of lake air" greets you in our historic, award-winning lakefront downtown district. Strolling the walking tours, biking the Interurban Trail or just resting on a nearby bench provides breath-taking views in all directions. We welcome you to our harbor town, rich in history and building toward our bright future.
Port Washington Main Street is a non-profit 501(c) 3 corporation representing 28 blocks and over 125 businesses along the Lake Michigan lakefront. Our mission is to enhance our community identity and heritage, to further develop a center of activity and to ensure economic stability in the historic district of Port Washington through dedicated efforts of organization, promotion, design and economic restructuring. As a Wisconsin Main Street community we are proud to be the vehicle for downtown revitalization applying the 4 Point Approach, which advocates restoration of the historic character of downtown while pursuing traditional development strategies such as marketing, business recruitment and retention, real estate development, market analysis, and public improvements. Our businesses, historic buildings and promotional efforts benefit from this approach by presenting a welcoming, original downtown district for visitors and citizens, alike.
With this successful revitalization taking place, it sets the stage for a great Wisconsin coastal community. As you walk the shores of Lake Michigan along the Harbor Walk you'll experience our charter fishing industry, a first class marina, seasonal festivals, naturally beautiful parks and perhaps even catch a glimpse of a tall ship sailing in. Take note of the state's largest collection of pre-civil war buildings, many of which have been carefully restored and maintained by their owners. Click to learn more about our numerous Main Street Events and businesses available to enjoy on your visit.
Our downtown welcomes visitors as well as the opportunity to start, relocate or grow a business. To claim your profitable piece of our community as your new entrepreneurial home, visit our business resources. Click here to learn about Main Street Programs available, making Port Washington Main Street a "one-stop-business-shop."
Businesses, visitors and citizens alike, we welcome you to be a part of our historic downtown; learn our history and take a glimpse with us into our bright future! |

June 14th is Flag Day. Working as a grade school teacher in Waubeka, Wisconsin, in 1885, Bernard J. Cigrand held the first recognized formal observance of Flag Day at the Stony Hill School. The school has been restored, and a bust of Cigrand also honors him at the National Flag Day Americanism Center in Waubeka.
