In 1862, with the Civil War in full swing, some Port Washington residents rioted to show their opposition to the draft, which disproportionally affected the immigrant population, as well as those less well-off. The riot, which inlcuded the rioters throwing the draft officer down the courthouse steps, was only quelled with the arrival of the militia, and the navy. Join us as we commemorate this event with storytelling of the riot, dedication of the new Wisconsin Historic Marker, a Veterans Day salute, Civil War displays, tours of the Courthouse, music & refreshments. Program at 2:00.
